What's the Plan?

So Rudy Giuliani is in. Question: What's his plan to hold this big party together? How is he going to assure conservatives who have differed with his past policies on life issues, family, and immigration that their views will have weight in a Giuliani-led party? So far, Giuliani has not done anything to soothe or meet the anxieties of social conservatives and immigration reformers, creating an opportunity for Sen. McCain (who does have a prolife voting record, whatever doubts one may feel about his true convictions) to blast Giuliani from the right.

And if Giuliani does nonetheless prevail, his no-concessions approach to social conservatives almost invites a third party challenge in 2008.

The risk that Giuliani might split this party is very real. It is a risk that Giuliani himself can avert by swift and effective outreach ... but there's no time to waste.
