In Non-Rudy News ...

Congratulations to John Podhoretz on  his appointment as the next editor of Commentary. Retiring editor Neal Kozodoy has been one of the most influential forces in American intellectual life. He has met the challenges of sustaining a monthly magazine of ideas in the era of the Internet, creating one of the most useful archives on the Net and an exciting new weblog, Contentions.

I worked closely with John Podhoretz when he was managing editor of the Weekly Standard in the 1990s. John was one of the most effective editors I have ever known, brilliantly capable in every aspect of the job, from conceptualizing new directions for the magazine to fixing commas. He was especially good at that all-important task: looking sincerely sad when he informed you that there was no possible way to pay a higher fee for your work.

Best wishes to both Kozodoy and Podhoretz as they enter this next chapter of their careers.
