A Tale Out of School

In early 2006, during another White House attempt to push amnesty through Congress, I happened to run into an old pal who had held an important White House domestic policy job through the first Bush term. Among his responsibilities: organizing the president's briefings on immigration policy. I asked him whether the president had ever been briefed on the issue by any immigration skeptic: George Borjas say. No, my friend answered, surprised. Not one. Then (being a fair-minded person) he added: That would have been a good idea!

Of course by that point he was back in the private sector.

So if you are wondering why the White House ignores the reasoned arguments of those on the other side of this issue, the answer is simple: It does not know what they are.
